May is National Elder Law Month
May has been designated as National Elder Law Month by the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) to raise awareness of legal issues affecting seniors, including estate planning, long-term care, and preventing elder abuse.
National Elder Law Month focuses on educating families, protecting rights, and securing legal counsel for aging adults.
Key Aspects of National Elder Law Month
Purpose: To educate older adults, their families, and caregivers about resources available to assist them, such as adult day care, respite care, local senior centers, and long-term care policies.
Focus Areas: Key topics include estate planning, Life Care Planning, Medicaid Planning, asset protection planning, Medicare, guardianship, and long-term care planning.
Action Items: National Elder Law Month encourages updating legal documents, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. It also encourages families to consider pre-paid funeral or cremation agreements.
Awareness: This month also highlights the prevention of fraud and scams targeting older adults.
